From May until November 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives—many endured savage beatings and imprisonment—for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws, the Freedom Riders’ belief in non-violent activism was sorely tested as mob violence and bitter racism greeted them along the way. “Freedom Riders” examines the 1961 Freedom Rides from many perspectives – that of the Riders themselves, the Kennedy administration, and the international community

This broadcast written, produced and directed by award winning radio producer/filmmaker donnie l. betts will feature guest Rev:James Lawson sit-in and non-violence trainer and other riders from the summer of 1961. They will join us for a community dialogue on race and other issues that face our nation plus share firsthand account of the rides. Plus musical guests singers from Southern Journey performing songs from the Southern Freedom Movement.
The Southern Journey ensemble is quickly becoming known for their dynamic performances that explore the ongoing cross-cultural influences that is the heart of American folk music. Cast includes Jada Roberts, Candy Brown Leonard Barrett Jr. and Kurt Soderstrom.

The series is the first and only radio drama series featuring stories about African Americans and their issues, the issues that affect all humankind heard nationwide, now streamed around the planet via KGNU.org. The series won the 2000, 01 and 2002 award for radio excellence from the Colorado Association of Black Journalists. Producer donnie l. betts was named 2002 Radio Journalist of the Year. The series has aired in 1999, 2000, 01, 02 and 2003 on Public Radio International.

I recent spend 3 great days in Atlanta with Dr. Vincent Harding as he went through his papers at Emory University.  Made many amazing discoveries. We then went to Morehouse as we looked through Martin Luther King Jr.’s paper which contained many letter from Dr. Harding to King and from King to Dr. Harding it was very emotional for Vincent. As a filmmaker it was a highlight so far as was the time we had with former members of the Black Think Tank,  Institute of the Black World.

This summer we spent time at the Horse track interviewing a wonderful Black Jockey and learning all about the back side of the track with wonderful trainers and groomers.  This is for our film The Story of America’s First Athlete (Blacks in Horse Racing).  Any help you want to offer to any of the project we would warmly accept.

 The spring was very busy. Working on videos of the 50th reunion of SNCC, radio dramas about SNCC and Haiti, plus the 761st Tank Battation from WWII.
