donnie l. betts
has over 20 years of experience in theatre, film, radio and
video. He is a founding member of two theatre companies in
Denver, City State Ensemble and the Denver Black Arts Company.
He has performed
on Broadway in "The Gospel at Colonus," off-Broadway in "The
Warrior Ant," and regionally in "Ma Rainey," Joe Turner Come
and Gone," and "Driving Miss Daisy."
donnie
has also directed over 25 stage productions and has won numerous
film and theatre directing awards. betts is a storyteller of great
power and range, who has been thrilling audiences for eight years
in Colorado and other western states with his lively tales of African
and American folk life. His "Spirit voices' performance consists
of African and African American folktales and stories that incorporate
and encourage audience participation. The program teaches students
and teachers about the call and response tradition in the African
and African American culture. betts has been described as a "natural
born teacher who shares his theatre arts generously with students."
His gifts go
beyond the personality and craftsmanship needed to create
a role or to direct a play. He genuinely gives of himself
offstage as well, emerging as a real-life role model for young
people and adults alike.

the Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts in Colorado
